My Birthday - Glengarry Lodge Day 5

The weather again wasn't looking great at my Birthday dawned. We opted to stay low and drove to Iverawe Smoke House as there leaflet promised nature trails which we thought Emma might enjoy.

We were pleased that the parking was free, and Emma was pleased that they had laid on an Easter Egg hunt. It was only a few pounds to enter and involved following the nature trails hunting for bird signs in the trees using clues. Once they were found you had to identify which bird it was. We were amazed we managed to identify most of them! The area was really pretty and it was nice to be in a woodland which wasn't conifer. The area is also used for fishing so there are a few ponds dotted about.

We had worked up a bit of an appetite so had lunch in the cafe. where we had probably the best service we've ever had in a cafe - the ladies serving told us all about the nature which could be seen in the area (including an otter which we failed to see) There's also a deli there selling lots of things including there smoked fish.

Post lunch we followed their other nature trail around to Loch Etiv, it was an easy walk, but a little bleak with the grey skies which was a shame. We were wondering if we could extend the walk, but the banks beyond where we reached went up high above an area which you couldn't walk round so we headed back on the track.

As it was still quite early on we decided to drive to Glen Nant Oakwoods for another stroll. We didn't have a route to follow but you can download one from Walk Highlands and the way is quite well marked from the free parking area. We decided to try and reach one of the waterfalls marked on the map, but gave up when the way on became quite rough going, instead opting to go to the top of a small hill called Creag a Crotha, sadly the weather turned and we got rained on, the hill also turned out to be a bit of a grassy hump which was a shame! We beat a hasty retreat and were relieved when we reached the track which took us back to the car.

Not quite the sunny mountainy birthday I imagined, but we had a lovely lunch :-)
