Yorkshire dales day 1 continued

We arrive back home fairly late afternoon and decided we needed some stodge  - it was halfway between lunch and tea time so we had a big plate of pasta and called it trunch.

Despite being pretty tired after caving we were itching to explore the surrounding area. So we left the house about 5pm for a walk above Settle where we were staying.

As we headed up hill the wind really picked up and it was freezing! Despite having on all my layers and hat/gloves/snood I regretted leaving my winter mitts at home. Emma didn't appreciate the cold either and we had a bit of a stand off as to whether she would continue or not. Finally Steve pursueded her and it was off over the undulations to view Victoria and Jubilee cave (very apt given it was the jubilee weekend). We passed by the impressive little tops of Warrendale Knotts due to lack of time and the coldness of the wind.

The tops reminded me of a mini version of the Langdale Pikes

Our way onwards took us to Victoria Cave. It had quite an impressive entrance and we wished we'd bought our helmets with us. We had to be content reading the notice board and geocache hunting instead - the latter being tricky given the volume of possible hiding places littered about. Some history about Victoria cave can be read here.

Then it was onwards to Jubilee cave where we sheltered just inside the entrance to get out of the wind and to have a snack, again neolithic remains were found in this cave also. It's only a tiny cave according to the internet, but worth a nose if you have something to stick on your head (some of the rock looked a little loose in the roof)

There it was onwards and downwards, Emma found a mini limestone pavement which she enjoying jumping around on avoiding falling down in the holes. Then it was back to Settle to try and find somewhere to eat, most places had either stopped serving or didn't look like they would let us in wearing our muddy boots so it was back to the cottage for a fire & toast and crumpets.
