I'm a little bit behind in updating my blog, too much going out and about.
The weather was saying snow for the Brecon Beacons so off we zipped. The tops were looking snowy but as we got nearer we realised our chosen tops only had a covering of hoar frost. It was hard to be disappointed though on such a lovely day.
I was feeling a bit tired so we parked high of the minor road which runs along the river http://binged.it/Yxx3ce . I'd not walked from this start point before, we headed up from our (very small) parking layby, missing the path and heading over tussocky ground. We soon joined up with the park which took us up to a very still Llyn Y Fan Fawr. This is my favorite place to be in the Brecon Beacons.
The whole area was bathed in a quiet morning light.

We took the narrow path up from the lake. Mike wanted to bag the top of Fan Hir so we detoured off to it once at the top. We did consider doing the whole Fan Hir ridge, but having done it a number of times before I didn't fancy the big long slog up, esp if there had been snow.

As we followed the ridge round it was interesting to see the frost line
Hardly any frost approaching Picws Du
The winds on the day before our walk had been very strong as we pass along the top we came upon the magical site of frozen lake blasted by the wind.
It was like something out of Charlie and the Chocolate factory
Yum!
Ice prawn!
The lake on the other side - Llyn Y Fan Fach, still a lovely lake but it has been dammed so does not feel a natural
Last time I was here I slogged it through loads of tussocks to cross back to the ridge in the back of the photo above. This time we look the path which hugged the mountainside which was far more fun, and much easier going.
We saw a red kite too, there always seems to be lots around that area
More ice formations

We followed the Nant Y Llyn waterfalls back to the car
We popped by Henrhyd Waterfall on our way back

An excellent day in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. I wish I lived in that area..
Impressive hoar frost!
